Anybody know why Chavez changed Venezuela’s time by 30 minutes? Yes, Chavez told everyone to set their clocks back by 30 minutes. This of course if easy for people who live in the ‘informal’ sector, but a headache for anyone who actually interacts with the rest of the world – scheduling meetings, telephone calls, airline reservation systems, the local stock market.
According to Bloomberg, a handful of other countries do not set their clocks in increments of one hour from Greenwich Mean Time – they include India, Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Hmmm, Iran is on that list.
The explanations that I’ve read aren’t that satisfying: it’s a whim…. it’s to put a personal stamp on everything….
Well, I don’t know what it means, but he did recently lose in his effort to be elected President for life, so I figure he’s got to be a little disappointed. We’ll see…
