getting to the bottom of things…

Trying to make sense of things by looking at causes and understanding their effects. Using science to discern what's real and relationships to determine what's of value. Curious about everything. www.samanthaclemens.comAnn Coulter talks about her faith
I generally try not to reinforce behaviors that I don’t like, so I haven’t written about Ann Coulter until this latest episode. I feel like it just provides her with more attention (good or bad) that she so clearly craves, which goads her to say ever-more outrageous things.
But, there was something about the way she talked about Christians vs Jews in the infamous interview with Donny Deutsch on his CNBC show “The Big Idea.” (for a transcript, click here, for video, click here).
She said that Christianity “…is a lot easier. It’s kind of a fast track.” She contrasted that with Judaism. Jews, she said, “have to obey.” She then again repeated, “We have the fast track program.”
She went on to say that Christians believe that Jews have to be perfected, to which Deutsch took great exception, since, he explained, he is Jewish. She then again repeated:
“That is what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we’re all sinners… [emphasis added]“
This struck me, because I used almost the exact same words when comparing Christianity with Judaism in a conversation with a good friend who is Jewish. But here’s the deal – I am not a Christian. I was a Christian - my father was a Christian minister and I was a sincere practitioner until my senior year of high school. But, I would never have used the phrase ‘fast track’ to describe Jesus taking on the sins of the world.
I don’t know if this is being discussed in evangelical circles, but I will bet that if it is, they suspect that Coulter is not a believer. That she is motivated by her desire to expose liberal hypocrisy, rather than a sincere desire to spread God’s word.
Of course, I don’t know what’s in her heart – no one does. But, watching her on the video in that little cocktail dress, didn’t it seem strange to listen to her call herself a Christian? Then say Christians have ‘the fast track program.’ Then grin broadly, like it was all some kind of a big joke? Are you buying what she is selling?
