Maternal/child health in Venezuela
What is it like to live in a country where abortion is illegal and families are large?  Our guest, Steve Bloomstein, went to Venezuela thirty years ago to grow exotic fruits and live a simple life.  However, the campesinos (or farm workers) he employed often asked him for pay raises because they had so many children – 15 children was not unheard of.

One thing led to another, and Steve now finds himself President of the Turimiquire Foundation which provides maternal/child health services to thousands of women.  Steve is going to tell us how this all came about, the cultural and logistical challenges faced by him and the organization, and what lessons he has learned along the way.

Conservatives vs. neo-cons
‘Conservatives’ are furious with the ‘neo-cons’ about a host of issues – here are the top 10 thank you notes Nancy Pelosi should have written after the last election according to Richard Viguerie, author of Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause (Bonus Books, 2006), beginning with:

  • 10.  To Vice President Cheney, Bill Kristol, and their cell of “neo-conservatives,” for turning the Republicans into a Trotskyite party—just what Americans have always wanted.
  • 9.  To Rush Limbaugh, for his display of “compassionate conservatism” toward Michael J. Fox a week before the election.
