Today in our world…

Evolution

The majority of Republicans doubt the theory of evolution, according to data from several Gallup studies.  The majority

“do not believe the theory of evolution is true and do not believe that humans evolved over millions of years from less advanced forms of life.  This suggests that when three Republican presidential candidates at a May debate stated they did not believe in evolution, they were generally in sync with the bulk of the rank-and-file Republicans whose nomination they are seeking to obtain.”

Okay, so that explains the three presidential candidates.  But, even among non-Republicans, there is a significant minority  who doubt that evolution adequately explains where humans came from.

Does it matter whether so many Americans do not believe in evolution?  Does it matter what our President thinks?  How does this affect education in America?  Who should decide what is taught in public schools?  If the majority of parents do not ‘believe in’ evolution, but the majority of teachers and administrators do ‘believe in’ evolution, what should be taught?  What does it mean to ‘believe in’ evolution?
